I recently had the pleasure of photographing Shannon and John’s intimate DC courthouse wedding. I couldn’t wait to share their epic love story!
Shannon and John first met at the National Book Festival in DC. Their mutual passion for reading sparked a connection that quickly evolved into a lasting bond. When they decided to tie the knot, it was only fitting that their wedding day would reflect their love for literature, history, and meaningful moments.
Their Washington DC elopement was an intimate and heartfelt celebration, followed by a meaningful portrait session at the Library of Congress. Shannon specifically chose this location because of her and John’s shared love of books.
I had a blast capturing their day and am excited to share their story.

An Intimate Courthouse Ceremony
Initially, Shannon reached out to me with the idea of capturing just a newlywed portrait session at the Library of Congress. During our consultation, I suggested documenting their courthouse ceremony as well, along with family portraits afterward. Shannon was thrilled with the idea, especially since she wasn’t aware that photography was permitted during the ceremony. We quickly made arrangements to ensure every moment of their special day was beautifully documented.
Shannon and John’s 30-minute ceremony took place at the H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse in Washington, DC. They were surrounded by a small group of loved ones as they exchanged personalized vows in a heartfelt, simple, and meaningful ceremony. The courthouse itself provides a timeless, classic backdrop that added to the charm of their elopement.
Here’s how to get married at the DC courthouse:
- You’ll need to apply for a marriage license from DC Marriage Bureau (more info here). There’s no waiting period, meaning you can get married as soon as your license is issued.
- Courthouse ceremonies must be scheduled in advance and are performed by judges or officiants.
- The ceremony fee is $45 and must be paid beforehand.
Pro tip: Photography is allowed! Many couples don’t realize this, but you can have your ceremony professionally documented, which means you won’t miss out on those unforgettable moments.

Portraits at the Library of Congress
Following the ceremony, we headed over to the Library of Congress, which was a dream location for Shannon and John. This was all Shannon’s idea—she chose it as their portrait location because it perfectly symbolized their love of books and history. I couldn’t have imagined a better setting for them.
The Library of Congress is hands down one of the most epic places for wedding portraits in Washington, DC. The grand architecture, intricate staircases, and timeless atmosphere gave their photos an elegant and romantic feel.
