Jefferson Memorial Engagement Photos: Quick & Easy Guide

Thinking about doing your Jefferson Memorial engagement photos? Solid choice. I’ve photographed a bunch of couples here, and it never gets old. Between the marble columns, Tidal Basin views, and classic DC vibes, it’s one of the most stunning spots in the city.

Here’s what I’ve learned to help you plan a smooth, stress-free, and fun session.

Best Time of Day for Jefferson Memorial Engagement Photos

Sunrise

Sunrise is my top recommendation if you’re up for an early start. Here’s why:

  • The light is soft and golden, perfect for flattering portraits
  • You’ll beat the crowds (and avoid photobombers)
  • We get more freedom to move around and explore nearby spots like the Tidal Basin

Sunset

Sunset is another solid choice. The lighting is just as epic, and there’s a warm, romantic vibe as the city winds down. It can get a bit busier, but we can usually find great angles with minimal foot traffic.

Midday

Thanks to the Jefferson’s shaded interior and towering columns, even a daytime shoot can work. The shade helps us avoid harsh shadows and squinty eyes, and it’s a nice option if your schedule’s tight or if you’re pairing it with a proposal or event nearby.

Parking Tips: Where to Park for Jefferson Memorial Engagement Photos

The best parking spot is super convenient:

Jefferson Memorial, DC Parking Lot A, 971 Ohio Dr SW, Washington, DC 20024

This lot is just a short walk to the memorial itself. Pro tip: Arrive a little early to allow time to park, walk over, and settle in. If you’re doing a sunrise shoot, you’ll likely have your pick of spots.

Permit Update (Good News!)

As of 2025, thanks to the new EXPLORE Act, most engagement sessions at the Jefferson Memorial don’t require a photo permit.

Larger sessions or setups with tripods, lighting gear, or commercial equipment may still require a permit from the National Park Service. Those permits cost $90 to apply plus a location fee between $50 and $250.

But for most couples, you can show up and shoot without any hassle.

Final Tips for Your Session

  • Wear shoes that are comfy enough to walk the monument steps
  • Bring a jacket or layer if it’s breezy near the water
  • Pets are allowed around the memorial but not inside the dome
  • We can add variety by strolling to the Tidal Basin or FDR Memorial nearby

Location Address

Thomas Jefferson Memorial, 16 E Basin Dr SW, Washington, DC 20242
